About

Michael Ruckenstein has spent much of his life writing, first in the context of medicine and academic work, and more recently in fiction. His fiction is powered by humor and memories, and reflects his observations about how forces, both internal and external, shape a person’s character and choices.

Are You Sammy Stein? began as a memoir written for family but evolved into a novel when early readers recognized its broader resonance. While informed by lived experience, the book is a work of fiction.

In addition to writing, Michael is actively engaged in the hobby of jewelry making, with a particular focus on stone setting and ring design. This reflects his lifelong passion for wearable art and the patience and precision he learned as a microsurgeon. His love for vivid stones of different colors is reflected in the vibrant character descriptions found in his fiction.

By profession, Michael is a Professor and neurotologist (ear and lateral skull base surgeon) at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Decades of academic writing and teaching have informed his discipline and clarity of thought, both of which continue to shape his creative work.

Michael grew up in Montreal, where he began his academic training. After stops in Toronto, San Diego, and Memphis, he was recruited to Philadelphia by the University of Pennsylvania, where he and his wife, Debbie, have lived since 1998. Together they have raised three children, two of whom are married, as well as two grandchildren and two highly demanding golden retrievers.
